My stream of consciousness watching the news as people are protesting in the Low End of Chicago: “Clearing the intersection” on Mich Ave. & Cermak. It’s about to be a stampede. This is crazy. #NATOprotests… Wow, the protesters have gas masks, too… Least they’re somewhat prepared. #NATO… On the other hand, these protesters are drastically outnumbered and have more than enough space to turn around, walk in the other direction. Why not just march west, further south or on the other side of McCormick Place, for that matter? They have plenty of space & opportunity. I do think it must be pointed out that some of those same protesters are probably unaware of the area in which they are “demonstrating.” Many of them are probably totally oblivious to the fact that only a few blocks west of them stood the “hood” three years ago. Had it not been for the demolition of the Harold Ickes project buildings (the last of a series of CHA apartment complexes that lined State Street). McCormick Place would probably not been the convention center chosen for the very Summit protesters are demonstrating against. Additionally, many of these protesters probably have no clue that there is a Chicago police station damn near right around the corner from them. Who knows what Emmanuel and McCarthy have hidden in that police station or how many more police officers they could put in place by having a station so close to a demonstration? These last few protesters need to get some sense and break out. The mere fact that they are outnumbered FIFTY to one would make me back the hell up. They simply have no plan. And that’s how people end up getting hurt. Furthermore, it’s not like they’re demonstrating for something tangible like the right to be treated equally or the right to express themselves freely. Based on the interviews I’ve seen most of these don’t even know why they’ve taken to the streets or what exactly their protesting against. What’s their strategy?
